They’ll try to shut you down’: Meeting Assange & the non-stop ‘War on RT’, by Margarita Simonyan

RTPosterUK

Last week, while in London, I went to see Julian Assange at the Ecuadorian embassy. We talked off the record of course, so I won’t divulge too much, but will post only what Julian insisted on making public. Before it’s too late.

Assange shared an enlightening story about a Kurdish TV station that had been shut down in Denmark. The story, like so many others – from diplomatic cables with undiplomatic comments to hundreds of uninvestigated war crimes in Iraq – came to his attention through a leaked cryptogram.

Once upon a time there was a Kurdish TV network in Denmark. It would just as happily ‘be’ anywhere else, but more fitting markets were off limits to the channel. The station, Roj TV, was aimed at Turkish Kurds, and that made the Turkish authorities very angry.

Turkish officials pressed their NATO ally Denmark to shut down the TV channel under some plausible pretext. But Denmark was reluctant, saying that multiple inspections didn’t find any propaganda of terrorism and there were no grounds to close it down. Such things weren’t done there; Denmark, after all, is a democracy.

What Putin is not telling us, Pepe Escobar

December 18, 2014. President of Russia Vladimir Putin during his tenth annual major news conference at the World Trade Centre on Krasnopresnenskaya Embankment (RIA Novosti / Vladimir Astapkovich)

Even facing what under any circumstances is a perfect storm; President Putin delivered an extremely measured performance at his annual press conference and Q&A marathon.

The perfect storm evolves in two fronts; an overt economic war – as in siege by sanctions – and a concerted, covert, shadow attack to the heart of the Russian economy. Washington’s endgame is clear: impoverish and defang the adversary and force him to meekly bow to the Empire of Chaos’s’ whims. And bragging about it all the way to “victory.”

The problem is Moscow happens to have impeccably deciphered the game – even before Putin, at the Valdai Club in October, pinned down the Obama doctrine as “our Western partners” working as practitioners of the “theory of controlled chaos.”

Eurasian Integration vs. the Empire of Chaos, by Pepe Escobar

Source:TomDispatch

As Washington “Pivots” to Asia, China Does the Eurasian Pirouette

November 18, 2014: it’s a day that should live forever in history. On that day, in the city of Yiwu in China’s Zhejiang province, 300 kilometers south of Shanghai, the first train carrying 82 containers of export goods weighing more than 1,000 tons left a massive warehouse complex heading for Madrid. It arrived on December 9th.

Silk-Road-Exhibition

Welcome to the new trans-Eurasia choo-choo train.  At over 13,000 kilometers, it will regularly traverse the longest freight train route in the world, 40% farther than the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway. Its cargo will cross China from East to West, then Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland, Germany, France, and finally Spain.

You may not have the faintest idea where Yiwu is, but businessmen plying their trades across Eurasia, especially from the Arab world, are already hooked on the city “where amazing happens!” We’re talking about the largest wholesale center for small-sized consumer goods — from clothes to toys — possibly anywhere on Earth.

The Yiwu-Madrid route across Eurasia represents the beginning of a set of game-changing developments. It will be an efficient logistics channel of incredible length. It will represent geopolitics with a human touch, knitting together small traders and huge markets across a vast landmass. It’s already a graphic example of Eurasian integration on the go. And most of all, it’s the first building block on China’s “New Silk Road,” conceivably the project of the new century and undoubtedly the greatest trade story in the world for the next decade.

Sergei Glaziev: stupidity is worse than theft

Dear friends,

Today is my my privilege to submit to you the full text of the recent article by Sergei Glaziev “Stupidity Is Worse Then Theft” originally published on the World Crisis website:

http://worldcrisis.ru/crisis/1716266.

I want to thank all those who participated in this difficult and long translation: Alice, S, Gideon, Marina (translation) and D.M. Pennington, Michael, Peter, Heather, Bernie, Patricia, Tom, Kristin  (editing).  This is a crucial text which is made available to the English-speaking world only thanks to the fantastic job of these volunteers.  Thank you guys!

Also, a reader of the French Saker Blog named “DePassage” (merci!) has called our community’s attention to a most interesting analysis made by  Jon Hellevig the Awara Group entitled “Putin 2000 – 2014, Midterm Interim Results: Diversfication, Modernization and the Role of the State in Russia’s economy” which you can find on this page http://www.awarablogs.com/putin-midterm-interim-results/ and which I strongly urge you to read.  It might give you a better sense of where the Russian economy is, along with a few surprises.

Clearly, until the combat operations resume (which the most probably will), the “economic front” is the most important one in the war against Russia and I will try to continue to bring to you alternative top-quality information and analyses to try to debunk the imperial media’s narrative.

Cheers and kind regards,

The Saker

Why did the Central Bank raise the interest rate and let the ruble flow? Author: Sergei Glazyev, academic RAS (Russian Academy of Sciences)

Another increase in key interest rates on loans issued by the Bank of Russia, for the purpose of refinancing commercial banks, made loans completely inaccessible for the majority of enterprises of the real sector of the economy. When the average profitability of the manufacturing industry is 7.5-8%, credit issued at rates of 10% or higher cannot be used by most businesses, either for investment or for replenishing working capital. Such decisions cut off the real economy, with the exception of some sectors of the oil, gas, and chemical-metallurgical sector, from credit issued by the State.

The EU and the Ukraine stand to lose the most from the current US policies against Russia, The Saker

The Saker recently posted a detailed reply, an extension of his previous posts on US and Russian military analysis, to a very good question from one of the followers of The French Saker blog.

In addition to this excellent post by The Saker, the short clip below is a complementary analysis by the Israeli analyst Yakov Kedmi.

Thank you to Iyas for the translation.

And now onto the Saker’s detailed response.

AE
——-

Saker’s response to a question on US/NATO vs. Russian military confrontation.

QUESTION:

Ukraine is becoming an American/NATO platform with no viable economy, a thoroughly corrupt junta-criminal government.  It has lost most characteristics of a state. We know its economy is no longer functioning. It is on economic life-support.

Q: What in history does this colonization most remind you and what does it present as a permanent platform for the projection of US hegemony right next to Russia?

In the context of US cruise missiles into Poland and 100 US tanks into Latvia, also right on the Russian border, how do you interpret these developments?
Add, Canadian military police running the police in Kiev (security apparatus hardening, in my view) and 1000 US military advisers on the ground with Ukie troops, and inside the command and control of their military, I see this as the two proxy armies facing off behind a mere mask.  Do you see the ‘boots on the ground’ as sacrifices the Hegemon is prepared to make (for surely the Russians don’t care who’s inside the battle zone they must dominant or they will be defeated)?

I interpret all the latest hardening of NATO surrounding the Russian border with Eastern Europe and the buildup internally (take over of the Ukie government in fact) as ominous and imminent to a shooting war to forever scar the Russian Federation as a menace to world stability.

The militia is paper thin mask over Russian military. Everyone understands that Russia cannot allow defeat or loss of ground.   The Ukies, a proxy army of cannon fodder value, a mask over NATO and US mercenary contractors and some regular “advisers”.

The opposite side does not bear any such burden of ‘loss’. If the Ukies lose and refuse to fight anymore, Russia will be demonized and the battle for more military conflict will shift to some other hot zone. Therefore, the Hegemon cannot be defeated by defeat in Ukraine.

For your answer I hope you stick just to the military threat, the military challenge, the strategic values of moves and counter-moves.  I think this situation is a changed scenario, and has upped the existential threat to Russia. But without military analysis, I don’t know if what I see is what I think I see.

REPLY:

Military planners like to have options and contingency plans available for as many situations as possible.  It just does not look good for a Chairman of the JCS to tell the President “no Sir, we never envisioned that situation”.  In order to avoid that, the military will practice and plan for a lot of situation the vast majority of which will never happen.

Germany, Stuck with Massive Bill for Ukraine, Asks Russia for Help, by Alexander Mercouris

  • IMF: Ukraine Weeks Away from Economic Collapse – $15 billion urgently needed
  • With 1 hand EU asks Russia for financial help, with other it bombs ethnic Russians in East Ukraine, sanctions Russian economy…
  • Black hole of Ukraine finances becoming a political liability for EU leaders
  • EU demanding austerity from Ukraine while population struggles with grinding poverty, economic collapse
  • EU policy towards Russia/Ukraine poorly conceived, in danger of collapsing due to contradictions

Ukraine_IMF

As this article in the Financial Times shows, the wheels are coming off  Ukraines economy, with the IMF now admitting it needs a further $15 billion on top of the money already given within weeks to avoid total collapse.

This has come after news the Ukrainian Central Banks foreign exchange reserves have fallen below $10 billion.

Ukraine must pay a further $1.6 billion from these reserves before year end to fulfil its part of the gas deal the EU brokered between Ukraine and Russia on 30th October 2014.

This will push the Central Banks foreign exchange reserves down to even more critical levels.

Meanwhile Gazprom has said that despite Ukraines recent purchase of 1 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia, Ukraines total gas reserves are close to critical levels, endangering transit of Russian gas to Europe.

The article however exposes something else, which is perhaps even more important.

The new European ‘arc of instability’, by Pepe Escobar

The European Council on Foreign Relations and Berlin think-tank Friedrich Ebert Stiftung have just reached more or less the same conclusion.

If the dangerous stand-off between the EU and Russia over Ukraine is not solved, the EU could face, up to 2030, a military build-up in eastern Europe; a new arms race with NATO as a protagonist; and a semi-permanent “zone of instability” from the Baltic to the Balkans and the Black Sea.

What these two think-tanks don’t – and won’t – ever acknowledge is that a new European “arc of instability” – from the Baltic to the Black Sea, as myself and other independent analysts have stressed – is exactly what the Empire of Chaos and its weaponized arm – NATO – are working on to prevent closer Eurasia integration.

By the way, the Pentagon excels in fabricating “arcs of instability.” The previous one was – and remains – massive, stretching from the Maghreb to Xinjiang in western China across the Middle East and Central Asia.

Moscow has totally identified the plot; Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, once again, has made it crystal clear, in detail.

American War Plans Would Fail if Europe Stumbles, by Ekaterina Kudashkina

Source: Sputnik News

Is Europe reconsidering its stance on Ukrainian crisis? Has it grown uneasy over the US’ war plans looming bigger? Radio Sputnik is discussing it with Gilbert Doctorow (US) and Dr. John Laughland (UK).

This week Minsk hosts another four-party meeting on Ukraine, bringing together representatives from Kiev, south-east regions, Russia and OSCE – organization for security and cooperation in Europe.

Days before the meeting the US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in favor of an anti-Russia resolution “strongly condemning the actions of the Russian Federation, under President Vladimir Putin, which has carried out a policy of aggression against neighboring countries aimed at political and economic domination.” A number of western analysts described the document as a US declaration of war on Russia.

60 Hi-Profile German Leaders Sign Petition Condemning Merkel’s Russia Policy

Source: Russia Insider

Apologies for the funny translation, we just ran this German article from Die Zeit through GoogleTranslate, but you get the idea.

This is not a minor thing, and a sign that Merkel is in big trouble.

The list is chock-a-block of heavy hitters and contains former top politicians, (mayors of Berlin and Hamburg, chancellor, president, head of top party, minister of defense, prime ministers of Germany’s 16 Bundeslander (like states), ambassador to Russia), top religious leaders, famous actors, scientists, business leaders, and prominent journalists.

If Merkel is known for anything, it is that she doesn’t stand for anything, believe in anything, and this flexibility and pragmatism has kept her at the top of the heap for ages now.

We bet she will roll with the new reality in Germany and soften her line on Russia.  Either that or she will get booted out.  Just watch.

Over 60 personalities from politics, economy, culture and media warn forcefully in an appeal against a war with Russia and calling for a new policy of détente in Europe.

Their call they make to the federal government, members of parliament and the media.

Initiated the call by former Chancellor advisor Horst Teltschik (CDU), former defense secretary of state Walther Stützle (SPD) and former Vice-President of the Bundestag Antje Vollmer (Green). ” We are talking about a political signal that the justified criticism of the Russian Ukraine’s policy does not mean that the progress we have achieved over the past 25 years in relations with Russia will be terminated, “Teltschik says the motivation for the appeal.

Have signed the text, inter alia, the former leaders of Hamburg, Berlin and Brandenburg, Klaus von Dohnanyi, Eberhard Diepgen and Manfred Stolpe, former SPD chairman Hans-Jochen Vogel, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, former German President Roman Herzog and actor Mario Adorf.

The call in the wording:

Another war in Europe? Not in our name!

No one wants war. But North America, the European Union and Russia inevitably drive up to him if they did not finally halt the disastrous spiral of threat and counter-threat stop. All Europeans, including Russia, have joint responsibility for peace and security. Only he who does not lose sight of this goal, avoiding wrong turns.

The Ukraine-conflict shows that the addiction to power and domination is not overcome. 1990 at the end of the Cold War, we were all hoping. But the success of the policy of detente and peaceful revolutions have made sleepy and careless. In East and West alike. When Americans, Europeans and Russians is the guiding principle to banish war from their relationship permanently lost. It is a different Russia menacing expansion of the West to the East without simultaneous deepening cooperation with Moscow, as well as the illegal annexation of the Crimea by Putin, not to explain.

Display

In this moment of great danger for the continent Germany has a special responsibility for the preservation of peace. Without the reconciliation of the people of Russia, without the foresight of Mikhail Gorbachev, without the support of our Western allies and without the prudent action by the then Federal Government, the division of Europe had not been overcome. To allow the German unit peacefully, was a tall, shaped by reason gesture of the victorious powers. A decision of historic proportions. From overcome division a solid European peace and security from Vancouver to Vladivostok should grow up, as it had been agreed by all 35 Heads of State and Government of the CSCE Member States in November 1990 in the “Charter of Paris for a New Europe”. On the basis of agreed principles and first concrete measures a “common European home” should be established, in which all the States concerned should learn the same security. This goal of the post-war policy is not redeemed until today. People in Europe have to fear again.
